Composers, Inc New Music Presenting Organization

Outreach and Community Action

Composers, Inc. engages in outreach and community action as a means to engage children, youths, and adults of the greater San Francisco Bay Area in creativity through music and composition.

Bay Area Young Composers Program

The Bay Area Young Composers Program at Composers (YCP), Inc. is dedicated to encouraging and performing the music of young Bay Area composers who have not yet graduated from high school or exceeded the age of 18. This program has the twofold purpose to encourage outstanding young composers to express themselves through composition while providing them with a prominent forum to be recognized for their work in YCP.

Bay Area Young Composers Program Guidelines

Eligibility

Young people who have not yet graduated from high school or exceeded the age of 18 are eligible. The composer's age and school status will be calculated from the time of submission and not the date of the actual concert. Young Composers may submit up to two compositions during any one season.

Performances

Compositions by young composers will be featured on Composers, Inc. concerts during part of their regular season. Composers, Inc. has sole discretion over concert programming and scheduling. The young composers of compositions selected for performance will receive free admission plus one complimentary ticket to the concert featuring their work. Composers whose compositions are programmed will be encouraged to briefly speak about their work at the concert preceding its performance.

Submission Guidelines

All submissions must be original compositions by a single composer. Compositions may be primarily acoustic, electronic, or a combination of both. Regardless of format every composition must be fully notated and be accompanied by a performance recording or electronic realization (such as MIDI). Compositions must be 5 – 8 minutes in length. Submitted instrumental or vocal compositions must utilize at least one live performer and cannot exceed four performers.

Interested young composers must submit*:

  • A completed application form
  • A letter of introduction/recommendation from a private or school music teacher (template provided at composersinc.org)
  • A biography, with current mailing address, email address, and phone number
  • A postage-paid, self-addressed envelope, if they wish their music returned.

Young Composers Program Application Form (MS Word .doc)

For each composition, young composers must also submit:

  • A legible, bound, fully notated score with program notes
  • A performance recording of the composition on a CD (CDs of computer playback such as MIDI are acceptable)
